Katsuhito is Tenchi's grandfather. He is also Yosho, the lost Crown Prince of Jurai. It was he who sealed Ryoko in the cave 700 years ago. He fled Jurai because of the turmoil created by his birth. He is half earthling and was not well accepted as Jurain by the nobles of his time.

He left Jurai when Ryoko attacked never planning to return. After defeating Ryoko, he lived as an earthling and eventually married and had a daughter (Tenchi's mother Achika). He lives as a Shinto priest at the Masaki Shrine.

He trains Tenchi because one day he knows that someone will come to earth looking for him. He had planned to send Tenchi in his place (nice of him to ask) but perhaps something will change his plans. He is one of the greatest swordsman in the universe and thus could have easily killed Kagato. However, he knew that battle would be the only way for Tenchi to learn of his true powers.  So he spared Kagato and had Tenchi fight him.
